Auschwitz – By many people's standard this is a thing they feel they have to see. The reasons for wanting to see Auschwitz can be many, for some it is just so they can say they have seen it, for others it is to show respect to those who have suffered and died in the camps at Auschwitz, for a very few of our English guests it is a trip to show respect to a loved one. No matter why you feel the need to see Auschwitz, it will touch you in some way before you leave it. Sometimes it inspires, sometimes it leaves you just with a hopeless felling, sometimes Auschwitz leaves you thinking “why?” and wanting to know more. To find out what could lead people to want a thing like this to happen and how could any human person allow Auschwitz to become a reality?
No matter how much people write and no matter how much you read, there is nothing that can describe the lives of the prisoners and the hardships that they suffered like a visit to Auschwitz & Auschwitz II Birkenau.
The State Museum in Oswiecim (Auschwitz) runs guided tours of Auschwitz and Auschwitz II Birkenau in English everyday that lasts about 3,5 hours. For first time visitors I would recommend these tours as they give you a good first insight into the camps history and the events that took place in Auschwitz and the over 40 sub camps that where under the control of the Auschwitz administration.
For anyone that has the opportunity while in Auschwitz Birkenau I would recommend a trip to the Sauna where there is a permanent photo exhibition called “The wall of remembrance” presenting family photographs brought to the camps by Polish Jews deported to Auschwitz.
For those of you, who would like to read more about Auschwitz, I have put together a list of books that I would recommend, these are all available to buy in our Ebay shop or at the Museum upon arrival there.
