Czorsztyn Castle Ruins/Niedzica Castle

(Zamek Czorsztyn)

The ruins of the Czorsztyn castle, once a Polish border fortress, still stands out high above the Dunajec.
The Czorsztyn castle received a number of other distinguished guests in it's prime age, including King Louis the Great of Hungary, who stopped here on his way to Krakow in 1370, and Saint Jadwiga, Louis' daughter and future queen of Poland, who stayed here in 1384.

This stronghold, from the second half of the XIIIth. century, has been the home of noble men and customs office on the trade trail from Krakow and Sasz to Hungary. Ever since the big fire of 1790 when the castle was hit by lightening it has remained in ruins. There are beautiful panoramic views from the balcony of the upper castle across the Pieniny Spiske, The Tatra's and the Czorsztyn reservoir.

There is a permanent exhibition in the castle that displays the history of the castle. And of the flora that grows in the area around.
